Born and raised in the “gateway city” of Punta Arenas, Alejandra Mancilla is Professor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Humanities, University of Oslo, Norway, and member of the steering group of the Standing Committee of the Humanities amp; Social Sciences, Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR SC-HASS). Her main research interests are in political and environmental philosophy, and ethics. Alejandra’s view of Antarctica as a fascinating place that forces us to rethink theories of territory, especially when it comes to concepts like sovereignty, colonialism, and conservation, is expressed in her book, From Sovereignty to Guardianship: Governing Antarctica, Governing the World (Oxford University Press, 2026), and in many other academic articles and op-eds (see here).
Currently, she is thinking about ways to create political communities where not just humans, but also other-than-humans can live and flourish.
