Antarctica Declaration
Have your say by the 30th of September
The draft Antarctica Declaration is now open for public consultation, and we warmly invite people from around the world to engage with it. The Declaration recognises that all Antarctic beings have rights that humanity must respect and protect and intends to establish a basis for global collaborative action to protect Antarctica that will benefit us all.
We encourage you to read the Draft Declaration and the accompanying Declaration Commentary, reflect on their implications, and share your feedback as part of this collaborative process. To make participation as accessible and inclusive as possible, the consultation will take place across multiple locations and in multiple languages, creating opportunities for people from diverse cultures, regions, and backgrounds to contribute their perspectives.

Your perspective matters. Whether you have detailed comments, questions, concerns or reflections, we invite you to share them with us. All submissions will be carefully considered and will help shape the final Declaration.

After a period of public consultation and review, the final Declaration will be signed in Cape Town, during the Rights of Antarctica Festival 2026, on 1 December 2026.

What would it mean to recognise the rights of Antarctica?
Following the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s 2025 resolution recognising Antarctica’s rights, this webinar brought together architects of international Rights of Nature law and drafters of the Antarctica Declaration to unpack who would represent Antarctica and the Southern Ocean in decisions that shape their future, what duties fall on humanity, and how this sits alongside the Antarctic Treaty.
